Tumko Shaheedon Bhule nahin Hum
bhuli nahi Sangrami Janta
bhula nahin rakt-ranjit Laal nishaan
bhuli nahi viplavi shamta
It is unfortunate to observe that 4 years after his martyrdom, people are forgetting the doyen of revolutionary theatre movement in India. 28th September on one hand marks the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh, ironically this great legend of Punjab passed away on 28th September 2011. Gurusharan Singh was a radical thinker, playwright, performer and an activist. He wrote more than 200 plays and has staged more than 1000 performances. He was popularly known among the marginalized sections in Punjab as "Baba Boher", a towering personality or "Bhai Manna Singh", after a character he created. His most popular plays are Toya, Bhai Manna Singh, Miti da Mul, Dhamak Nagare Di, Kursi Morcha ate hawawich latkde Lok, and kamiyanda wehda. After 1950s when IPTA was completely absent in Punjab it was Gurusharan Singh who led the theatre movement all over Punjab and established the art of Peoples theatre. His theatre was for people and not for elites. He performed among the rural and urban proletariat, among dalit masses and tribals. Through his theatre he relentlessly strived to fight for the establishment of casteless-classless society. Though he has been awarded many well known awards yet the institutions of theatre and drama refuses to acknowledge his existence. It is for the people and peoples activist to remember Gurusharan Singh and carry further the work he has left for the cultural activists.
A short clipping of the Documentary Flim- Kranti da Kalakar made on Gurusharan Singh:
